User Notes: According to Sony's site, the cell phone alert function only works with the Japanese domestic protocol of CDMA, one of the largest cell phone networks in Japan (PHS being the other one, which is not compatible). It works by having CDMA built into the E600, then the MD player can recognize the signal patterns of CDMA-incoming calls to a device within close proximity (in this case, probably 1.5ft), then it plays a beep through the MD's headphones to notify the user. --Jason Kwan

Lack of remote backlight support: Though the MZ-E60 has a remote port and supports LCD remote functions, it does not support the remote backlight feature. Neither the backlit remote from the MZ-E55 (the RM-MZ55), nor the RM-MZ2S (the backlit version of the MZ-E60's RM-MZ2N) will illuminate their backlight when plugged into the MZ-E60, although in both cases the LCD and functions on the remotes work fine. -Roland M.

Variants: The MZ-E62 is the European version of the MZ-E60, only its color [silver with blue accents] differs.

User comments: I have the MZ-E60 and was surprised to find the model that replaces it, the MZ-E300, to be somewhat inferior: The MZ-E300 has no remote, nor can it accept one (headphone jack does not have the remote connector). The body is completely plastic, unlike that of the E60, which has an aluminum lid. And I'm curious about why Sony decided to limit the memory buffer to 20 secs rather than 40, which is the usual limit on all current Sony MD players and recorders. I doubt this smaller buffer will make any practical difference, but it does point to Sony's effort to "cheap out" on overall quality. The only advantage the E300 seems to have over the E60 is that its stated battery life is almost tripled. -Brett Kaplan

User comments: The volume buttons on the remote are troublesome. You would like to be able to use any of the controls on the remote with a finger and a thumb. The + button is located directly across from the Hold switch, so you can easily grip the remote and press the + button without worrying about the Hold switch. But the - button is located across from the pause button so you can't just grip and press the - button very easily. Note that the main body uses a single rocker switch for the volume as opposed to two buttons, and that would perhaps be better for the remote. This may apply to other Sony models with remotes (the MZ-E55's remote is labelled "RM-MZE55"). Additionally, the unit "...has a rather poorly designed battery door. It's kind of fragile and the clipping is very smooth: when carried in a pocket it may sometimes (well, seldom) open by itself thanks to clothes' friction." (Marc Herbert)

The included remote is backlit, and is an updated version of the standard Sony stick remote that is currently found on other Sony MD models. Comments: The E35 is an interesting evolution of the E30. The E35's dimensions would be nearly identical to an E30 with its rear battery bulge shaved off. Simply as a design statement however, the E35 is not necessarily an improvement. Whereas the E30 belonged to the ``windswept stone'' school of design, bearing sensuous curves that made it a pleasure to hold, the E35 is more of the ``technobrick'' school. Its surfaces are dead flat, and its edges are surprisingly sharp. In an interesting twist, the LCD display and controls are on the rear surface, and instead of the traditional hold switch, the [tiny] stop, seek, play and volume buttons are under a sliding ``hold shutter'', quite similar to the one the edit controls were hidden under on the MZ-R2. Finally, the ``open'' button is a simple push-button (much like a CD player), not a sliding button as on all other Sony's to date. -eaw

Features: Battery compartment accepts either NiMH gumpack or 1.5V AA cell (separate battery case cannot be used). Bass boost and AVLS controls are on the rear surface, other controls are mounted on the left edge. Playback time: NiMH gumpack 4.5 hours, AA alkaline: 6 hours, NiCad: 2 hours. Available in silver, blue or orange. NiMH gumpack and charger are sold separately.

Features: Based upon E30/E50 electronics but with a new ``head loading'' mechansim that allows an MD to simply be pushed against the top of unit, whereupon the door pops out of the way and permits disc insertion. Battery compartment accepts either a gum pack shaped Nickel Hydride cell or a single AA cell. The former provides 4 hours playback, the later 5 hours.

Features: US intro May 1997. Two LCD's, one each for the MD and tuner. Automatic station preset (finds FM stations and presets them in memory), Automatic memory scan (scans and plays stations which have been preset), 24 station memory (8 AM/ 16 FM). Metallic gray finish, LCD remote that controls tuner and MD player. 6 hours MD playback on two AAs, 4.5 hours on rechargeable NiMH. Radio play: 35 hours on two AAs, 28 hours on rechargeable. Wide band FM tuner: 87.5-108MHz, AM: 530-1710kHz. Optional BP-DM20 battery.

Features: ATRAC 3.5 (CXD2536AR), "Vertical" design, large LCD readout, 10 second buffer memory. Provides 4 hours playback on two AA batteries. Unit will accept the Sony Ni-MH battery-pack model BP-DM20 which charges internally in about 3 hours using the AC adapter and provides 3 hours [Sony] to 4 hours [user report] continuous playback. Unit not available in Japan.

Variants: Unit dubbed MZ-E20 in Europe and Canada and comes without the AC adapter

Comments: Tips: If you can't get enough output from your MZ-E40 try a pair of Koss Porta Pro or Porta Pro Jr. phones for $40. They look like full-size foam earpad phones but cleverly fold up into a 3.5 x 2.5" bundle. They develop strong bass and have an spl around 105dB (compared to 90-96dB for most headphones). A user writes that using the MZ-E40 with a power adapter and playing it at full volume can cause it to overheat and shutdown. A solution in a car environment (if you have a separate power amp) is to wire the E40 directly to the car's power amp inputs so that you may run the unit at a lower volume setting.

NiCads can be charged inside the unit by using a small piece of cardboard or rubber eraser to hold down the charger enabling switch inside the battery compartment.

A user reports: I learned to use only Duracell alkaline batteries with this player (7.5 hours per pair with the player mostly sitting still). Rechargeable alkalines don't last long enough -- only 1.5 to 4 hours, they are unreliable. He later adds: I bought two pairs of Duracell Ultra AA's. The first pair only lasted 6 hours; I was walking around. The second pair lasted 7:45 -- only fifteen minutes longer than the standard batteries, not the 1 hour longer as claimed on the duracell.com web site. That is enough testing to indicate to me that the Ultras do not last much longer than the standard model, but cost significantly more. I got some 12 hours out of the expensive Lithium AA batteries with the E40.

Misfeatures: The E40 bridges the bass to mono when megabass is enabled. Check by switching back and forth between megabass and flat, listen for the bass part of the music jump to the center. -Michael Hoffman

Tips: As mentioned in the E3 owner's manual, the MZ-E3 is capable of recharging the Ni-MH battery pack, model BP-DM20 ($25 from The Edge electronics in the US). The BP-DM20 will play continuously for 2.5-3 hours, compared to 1.5 hours with NiCads.

Comparison with MZ-E2: The MZ-E2 is smaller than the MZ-E3 unless you use AA drycell batteries. The AA attachment to the E2 is bulky and makes it bigger than the E3. The E2 does not have a built-in LCD, you must use the remote to see what track you are on. The E2 and E3 are almost identical in operation and features.
