This is a guide on BASIC servicing for all MD devices, I would recommend you do this for EVERY MD device you buy, unless you know it was correctly serviced recently. This guide will apply to ALL units.
Re-Greasing the Laser Mechanism
This is the first thing I do whenever I get a new MD device, and a very important task, as this will make the unit have less trouble reading discs, and will do it faster than before.
Symptoms
- Slow to read songs/TOC
- Skipping
- Laser sled (the part that slides around on a track) getting stuck
Required Tools/Skills
- White Lithium Grease
- A screwdriver with a set of QUALITY precision bits
- Service manual for your unit (if you have access to it)
- A toothpick or something similar to apply the grease
- Basic repair knowledge/skills
How-to
This is fairly easy to do, start by removal of all power to the unit (Gumsticks, AA sidecars, DC connection, etc.), and then start disassembly of the device (using specific guides/service manuals for each device if available). Most MDLP Sony Portables disassemble in similar ways, just take off the 4 screws holding the lid (where the screen or controls are on recorders, or the part that pops up when you press eject on players), and carefully pull it off from the rest of the unit, as there may be ribbon cables connecting the lid to the rest of the unit. In the case of decks and other units, find a service manual and read how to open it, if one is not available you should start removing external screws until you can access the laser sled, whilst remembering where screws go.
Once you can access the laser sled, you should apply some of the grease to your toothpick (or whatever you will use to apply grease), and carefully rub that onto the worm screw (the side that has threads on it) and the rail (the smooth side), while remembering that you don't want to use too much, and that it will spread itself evenly as the laser moves around. After this, I would connect the unit to power, and try loading a disc. if the laser seems to move sluggishly, or seems to get stuck while moving, I would recommend skipping thru the songs on the disc, to see if that helps work the lubricant around the sled. If that does not help, odds are you did not use enough lubricant. After all of this is done and tested, you can screw the unit back together and enjoy.
