User Comments: Great sound. A menu function allows scrolling of MD titles and the Disc Title. You can leave it to Auto scroll or manual scroll. The specs indicate a few dB less in dynamic and S/N ratio for the MD section compared to the equivalent line from Pioneer (i.e MEH-7300R for example), but who cares, it's only for listening to in a car. The figures concerning the FM section are in the same range. With a proper reading of the user's manual, you get a very cool unit to listen to all your favorites tunes in car. The LCD reading and front-panel switches and buttons are correctly laid out on the detachable face. The unit seems strong enough to last a few years. -Colin Duport

• Source Tone Memory: This feature allows you to store bass, middle and treble tone settings for each source (MD, FM, AM and Changer).
• Volume Offset Control ("VOL OFFSET"): The level of each source may be independently adjusted to prevent radical leaps in output volume when switching from one source to another. The available settings range from -8 to 0.
• Station Name Preset (SNPS): This feature allows you to assign names to radio stations. Up to 32 FM stations and 16 AM stations can be given a name. Each name can be up to 8 characters in length.
• CR-2 Advanced Tuner: This unit uses Kenwood's CR-2 Advanced tuner for clear radio reception.
• Clean Reception System Circuit (CRSC): This circuit controls multi-path distortion by reducing stereo separation. As stereo separation is reduced, multi-path has less effect on the radio signal, improving reception in areas with tall buildings and mountains.
• MD Text Display: This unit will display MD disc and track titles that have been pre-recorded. This receiver will not allow you to enter disc/track titles for MDs, it will only display titles that have been recorded.
• Last Position Memory: If the unit is shut off or switched to the tuner mode while an MD is playing, the next time MD is selected as the source, playback will resume from the point where it left off.
• Auxiliary Input "Ready": When used with an optional adapter (KCA-S210A or CA-C1AX) or with the KDC-CX87 CD changer, this unit can accept input from an auxiliary source. This unit cannot accept input from an auxiliary source unless the appropriate adapter or CD changer is purchased and connected. When the CA-C1AX adapter (item CAC1AX) is used, you cannot connect a CD changer to the head unit because the CA-C1AX plugs into the DIN changer control connection on the head unit.
• Calendar Function: The date may be set into memory and displayed.
• Memo Mode: You may input a text message (up to 32 characters) and set the date when that text will appear on the display. The message you select automatically appears on the chosen date when the unit's power is first turned on. You may enter up to 30 separate text messages into memory.
• Weather Band Tuner Compatible: This unit is compatible with the Kenwood KTC-WB100 weather band tuner (sold separately). The optional tuner box allows you to tune in weather band radio stations. User comments: Matthew J. Hunt: Unit was originally tagged at $269.96. I bought it (actually two) for $135.00 at the Wal-Mart in LaVale MD. A few days later they reduced it to $65.00 - the difference of which Wal-Mart credited back to me. My friend who works there said that it's very likely that they will reduce it further perhaps even to less than $50.00. These are, of course, brand-new, unopened items. They just haven't sold well. I ordered the CD-changer (10-disc) for this particular unit for $199.00 from HQ Audio. The Excedio changer is not FM modulated, rather it connects via a single DIN cable. Their URL is http://www.hqaudio.com. 'Excedio' is apparently the top line of Sanyo mobile audio and fairly new. As I'm sure you guys have noticed, the 'support' for MD stuff has been a bit lacking, but I talked to Sanyo to find a retailer to buy the changer and they knew the unit perfectly. Reported by Ken (09.04.01 20:39:59): Disc Error/Ejecting Discs I bought two Sanyo MDR-4 car decks from Wal-Mart back when they were clearing them out for $65 each. The first one worked great for six months or so and then started giving me disc errors and ejecting the discs. This happened with every disc I tried, prerecorded or otherwise. I swapped it out with the other one I bought (I bought two because they were so cheap), and the second one started doing the same around six months later. Beware.

User comments: The MDX-400 is really nice. It has two parts - the in dash 4MD changer, and a separate tuner/preamp unit. This makes it much easier to install, since all of the connections are made on the preamp unit, which doesn't have to be crammed into the dash where the stereo goes. There are connections for power, Sub, Front, Rear, Unilink, 2 antennas, wired remote, and MD changer. There's also a wired remote included, which is necessary because the display is so big that they couldn't fit all of the buttons onto the front panel.

The MD changer function works great - there's a cartridge which holds 4 MDs, and it changes between discs in a few seconds. The 2-line display shows the disc or track name on the top line, and the elapsed time on the bottom. The LCD is backlit in a blue-green color, and the buttons can be switched between green and red illumination.

It has a diversity antenna system, which constantly samples two antennas to determine which has the best signal. This gives improved radio reception in areas with weak signals.

It controls an optional TV in the car, and you can see the disc name and track names on the TV. It also controls an optional DSP module which lets you set your seat position and then it digitally delays the signals from each spkr by different amounts so that they all reach the specified position at the same time. The DSP has 10 DSP modes which you can link to your CDs, so that you can have your classical CD play in the concert hall DSP mode, and the disco CD play in disco DSP mode automatically.

The only mis-features that the MDX-400 has are:

• It does not have the "source tone memory" function (independent bass/treble settings for FM, AM, MD, and CD) that most sony ES car receivers have. This is instead implemented with as the "Last Sound Memory" function of the optional DSP. So, you have to have the DSP if you want this feature.
• The "Loudness" function is disabled if you have the DSP connected. Without the DSP, the loudness function works fine.

User comments: (regarding the MDX-61 follow on unit) I have to say that the MDX-61 MD changer is the most wonderful car stereo component I've ever owned! I love the shuffle play - it doesn't repeat (unlike my CDX-81 CD changer that I exchanged for the MDX-61) and there is almost never a delay between songs, even when changing discs (thanks, 10 second memory!). It is such a joy to load it up with 6 discs, press shuffle play, and get over 7 hours of non-repeating music. It's like listening to a radio station that only plays songs you like! I wish there was a home MD changer...
