Highlights of
Kenwood's XM-7MD mini-compo system with
DM-WH9 ``Double MiniDisc Recorder''

The new Kenwood XM-7MD mini-compo system includes the DM-WH9 "Double MiniDisc Recorder", a two drive MD recorder (bottom lefthand unit in photo). No price is stated for the MD unit itself, but the whole system (MD recorder, 6 CD changer, tuner, amp, speakers) costs JPY 199,800.
Highlights
- ATRAC version 4.0 (my compliments to Kenwood for stating this), D/A and A/D converters with 20 bit accuracy. S/N: over 92dB. (But CD section S/N is over 100dB !?).
- One touch MD to MD copying, in analog, with titles being copied at the same time. (They state that since both MD units are in the same chassis, their audio circuitry is in close proximity, allowing low distortion, high quality dubbings (copies) to be made).
- Digital recording from CD - can record 1 CD to two MDs simultaneously, or add one track from a CD to two MDs simultaneously.
- Multiple recording - can simultaneously record from CD to one MD recorder while recording from the tuner or an external source to the other MD recorder.
- Long "relay" recording - if the source material is longer than will fit on one MD, such as from the tuner or multiple CDs, recording can be set to continue from one MD drive to the other.
- FM information titling - information from FM stations that broadcast text (in Japan only?) can be stored in memory with one button press, from there it can be readily used for titling tracks.
- Kanji titling.
- Two digital optical inputs.
- D.R.I.V.E circuitry.
- Japanese domestic FM tuner (76MHz to 90MHz -- not a world tuner).
- Optional cyber titler keyboard available that plugs into the unit (can also print labels, like a Dymo label maker). Cost JPY32,000.
- Sampling rate converter.
- New "quick move" and "quick erase" editing functions allow you to select an entire set of tracks to be moved to a new spot, or erased.
- "New Preview" function.
