The Sony RM-MZ4R is an early-generation wired stick remote for MiniDisc players, produced around 1999–2001. It predates the NetMD era and was mainly packaged with MDLP-capable (but pre-NetMD) portable recorders. It has a simple non‑backlit LCD, basic transport controls, and no jog dial or titling ability.

Bundled With (Official) The RM-MZ4R was shipped as the standard remote with these MiniDisc models:

  • MZ-R700
  • MZ-R501
  • MZ-R500
  • MZ-E501 (some regions; used for playback-only units)
  • MZ-G750 (FM-equipped version bundled with same style remote, sometimes labeled RM-MZ4R rather than RM-G750)

These models generally launched around 2000–2001, just before Sony shifted to NetMD (MZ-N707, etc.).

Fully Compatible (Tested and Functional) These models support full playback, display, and menu controls using RM-MZ4R:

  • MZ-R900 (successor model; RM-MZ4R works perfectly)
  • MZ-R909 (same compatibility; shipped instead with the more advanced RM-MC11ELK)
  • MZ-R410/R500/R501/R700 series (core group that uses this remote generation)

Partial Compatibility RM-MZ4R will physically connect and control basic transport on these models but lacks full display/menu support:

  • MZ-N707 / MZ-N710 (NetMD models; playback control works, but text and advanced functions not available)
  • MZ-N910 / N920 / N10 (modern OLED remotes expected; RM-MZ4R text display may show garbled data or none)
  • MZ-NF610 / NF710 (FM/NetMD units—FM operations not mapped to hardware buttons)

Summary Characteristics Display: Single-line monochrome LCD (no backlight) Functions: Play, stop, pause, FF/REW, group skip, volume control Connector: 4-pole 3.5 mm Sony inline remote jack Era: MDLP generation (just before NetMD)—-
