Released simultaneously as the MD-MS701 and MD-MS702, they are almost identical except for color differences. Uses a proprietary lithium-ion rechargable battery, so it may be difficult to find a modern replacement.
The minidisc.org site claims the Pioneer PMD-R3 and Kenwood DMC-J7R are the same unit.
A rare red version of the MD-MS702 exists as the model MD-MS702-Red. The back features the Danish rock band Michael Learns To Rock This is likely a promotion for the 2001 compilation album 19 Love Ballads which came out in Europe with an exclusive red cover.

TOC ERRORa (the SLED gear)
It's very common in this generation of Sharp players for the SLED gear to crack. Replacements can be resin printers a guide can be found here
After you replace the SLED gear, make sure that the sled is back in the home position. If it is not, you will still see 'TOC ERRORa' popping up. Reposition the sled to the left back to home position. The unit sometimes does not reposition the sled back to home on startup.
UTOC ERROR
After replacing the SLED gear, you may see 'UTOC ERROR'. If you see 'UTOC ERROR', this can be due a variety of issues. It may be because the drive assembly is not properly installed in the unit or because the 2 flex cable assemblies that connect to the drive assembly are not seated well. Running the auto-adjustment can help resolve 'UTOC ERROR' issues on these units.
Recharging a lithium-ion battery
The battery does not charge unless you connect external power and press the STOP button twice. Once this is done, the battery icon will continually show with three internal dots increasing to show charging is in progress. When the battery is finished charging, the battery will no longer show on the screen.
The battery compartment in the MS701/702 units is slightly larger than the battery itself. There can be some misalignment issues between the positive battery terminal inside the unit and the battery. The positive terminal on the battery is slightly inset which leads to the unit positive terminal to not connect.
If you insert a battery and the battery charging icon only shows for about three seconds, the battery is not charging. This same behavior can be seen if no battery is inserted while on external power and STOP is pressed twice.
Adding a shim to the interior side of the battery can help resolve alignment issues.
