Repair
It seems the device will accept any IDE 2.5" hard disk drive with capacity greater than 540MB; mine came without a disk at all and just a packet of three screws where the original would sit. I added a 40GB drive which was recognised and could be initialised for each of the three 'drawers' of the 'filing cabinet' concept space. However it is certain that any extra capacity above 540MB is not going to be used by the unit.
