There's a lot to go through here, so it's understandable that you may need to reach out to others for help.
The MD community is famously helpful and friendly, but we ask that you follow some basic steps before you post on Reddit, Discord, or elsewhere.
Before you ask
Please read this entire guide, including the FAQs - we're active in the community and build these guides based on what we see is asked most commonly.
Use the search feature for information about particular models and accessories. Equipment pages and repair guides are made by a worldwide community of owners and enthusiasts who want to share their experiences for the benefit of all.
Above all else: reading is easier than typing! This resource has been built, refined, and corrected over many years so it likely does already answer your questions. If it doesn't, we want to improve and add those things to the site so that everyone can learn from it.
How to ask for help
Let us know what what you want from MD, what you've already read, and what is missing. Every MD experience is unique and what one person wants may not work for another.
The more detail you provide, the better someone can assist.
Buying advice
If you are deciding between a few different devices, share the whole context including the asking prices in the "for sale" listings.
Devices / equipment
If you disregard price, availability, use-case, and necessary modifications (the Sir68k OLED screen replacement), the MZ-RH1 is probably the "best" MD device. It supports Hi-MD, copying tracks back to a PC without exploits, has a gorgeous metal shell, and is very small.
But price, availability, use-case, and mods cannot simply be ignored. If you don't want to spend several hundred US$ on one machine, it isn't the best device. If you don't want a portable, it isn't the best device. If you don't want to order and install a limited-run replacement display, it isn't the best device.
What is "best" or "right" for you depends on factors that you need to let us know about when asking for advice. This is covered in the What to get page of this guide.
Example
Let's say that you are looking for an MD recorder and see two listings on eBay or local classifieds. One is a R50 and one is a NF520D.
The NF520D has more features: it supports MDLP, NetMD, AA batteries, and is smaller.
The R50 is made of metal and feels more premium. It also supports real time recording ("dubbing") which the NF520D does not.
If you want to use MD to record in real time from a CD or microphone, the NF520D cannot do that. If you want to copy FLAC or MP3 files from a PC, the NF520D can do so faster via Web MiniDisc Pro. The R50 would need to "listen" to that audio in real time to record it to disc.
If you want to use this MD device on the go, the R50 needs a battery rebuild or a sidecar. The NF520D accepts standard AA cells.
What you want to do with MD is the biggest factor in what you should buy. A stranger online may say the R50 is a better choice because it looks nicer or supports the recording method that person prefers. But if you want to record over USB then that argument is moot.
And all of this does not consider price: the NF520D may be more recommended than the R50, but it would not be if the R50 is $60 while the NF520D is $200. It also does not consider the condition of a device: the NF520D may have been used as a Beyblade while the R50 lived in a pouch on a desk and has no visible signs of wear.
You need to include these factors in your help request for good advice.
Something not working
Although we have guides for several issues, including the most common ones, if your MD equipment is not working as intended then the community may be able to help.
As with buying advice, be sure to describe your situation and what is not working correctly. Let us know what you have already tried and if it was ever working as desired.
What to avoid
Contacting wiki admins
Please do not send DMs or emails to wiki accounts for advice, for several reasons:
- We cannot respond quickly and/or have DMs disabled
- The best knowledge we have is already shared in wiki pages or guides
- Most of the wiki's content is from others rather than the admins
- You would only get one or two perspectives instead of dozens or hundreds from a public post
Low-effort posts
Do not post on /r/MiniDisc without enough detail. We want to help you, not ask lots of questions about basic information you have not included in your post.
The AutoModerator on /r/MiniDisc has rules to automatically remove posts with poor titles like just "help" or "advice".
